What is Gestalt Language Processing?

There are 2 different ways that a child might develop language. Some kids first learn single words, then learn how to put two words together, then three, and so on.  This is called Analytic Language Acquisition. Other children learn language by first learning longer chunks of words, like phrases or full sentences, then learn how to break down those scripts, or “gestalts”, into smaller chunks, then single words. Next, they start putting their own unique phrases and sentences together! This is called Natural Language Acquisition, or Gestalt Language Processing.  This is not a diagnosis or disordered way to learn language, but some children and families benefit from the support of a Speech Language Therapist to help them understand and move through the stages of Natural Language Acquisition successfully.

Common Characteristics of Gestalt Language Learners

  • They communicate using “scripts” from their favorite song or TV show
  • They use rich intonation when they talk, even if their words are not clear enough to understand
  • They love music, whether it’s listening, humming, singing, or watching the same music video again and again
  • They are autistic-- at least 85% of autistic children are gestalt language processors, but not all.  Your child can also be a gestalt language processor if they do not have autism.
  • They sometimes surprise you by saying an entire phrase or sentence independently, when they don’t normally communicate verbally
  • They often repeat what you say to agree with you
  • They often repeat the questions you’ve asked them instead of answering them
  • They like to act out the same play sequence again and again
  • They have had a lack of progress with traditional speech therapy or AAC
